This review is from: InFocus ScreenPlay 8602 WUXGA (1920 x 1200) DLP Projector - HDLet me state no single projector is perfect. There will be a give and take with any unit you purchase. The SP8602 is not without its flaws. I believe the engineers could have put more effort into designing a better cable management area. The one used is a good idea, but it lacks stability. The plastic clips are flimsy and will break easy if you're not careful. Also the DI action could have been better. If your unit has the old firm ware you'll need to upgrade it to one of the newer V7x versions in order to get better iris action. It still won't be as smooth as some, but it will be better and less aggressive.OK now for the good stuff! I've been looking for an upgrade to my current Benq W1000 for 3 or 4 months now. It's a stressful process of elimination trying to find what fits one's budget and taste. On firing the unit up, I find it imperative to set the projector not to search for an incoming signal. Set the unit to lock on one input, so it doesn't spend 30 seconds looking for a signal.I've spent the last few months viewing the units I could find in my area. Having seen Sony's VW60 and VW70s I've found the image quality great! My only problem was brightness. Neither would light up my 120 inch screen with a few lights turned on. I've also seen the Epson 8350 and 9350..basically the same projector. The 9350 cost is much closer in cost to the SP8602. Other than cost..these units have NOTHING in common. The level of clarity and depth the 8602 provides is on a much higher level. Images are almost palpable in a sense. You start to feel as though your watching through a window and not a projector. Contrast numbers would suggest the Epson 9350 would be the better unit(50,000:1) for black levels and contrast.This is not the case at all ..those numbers mean nothing once you've seen both,the SP8602 is (30,000:1)!The Benq W6000 is another unit I've spent time with. It is also in the same price bracket as the now discounted SP8602. Both are very sharp as single chip DLPs normally are. The differences lay with the chips used and processing.Both units are EXTREMELY bright in best mode. Where the SP8602 excels over the Benq is skin tones,color accuracy and black levels. There's more depth and pop with the SP8602 because of it's superior native contrast. Both units use dynamic irises to achieve better black levels. Neither is as smooth as I would like. The Sony's are much better at this feature.The SP8602 has CFI for smoothing fast moving sports. It's not a feature I would use with movies. It will give your movies a soap opera affect. This is when film starts to look more like a home video. If you're RBE sensitive, the SP8602 has an option to operate at 6X Color wheel speed. The unit will run a few dB louder, but your chances of seeing rainbows is almost impossible.The SP8602 isn't a beautiful projector by any means!The Benq w6000 has it beat in this area, as well as just about any other unit out there in looks.lolBut when it comes to image quality...the units competition gets a little thin. You'll need to spend considerably more to best this units image quality.It doesn't have the deepest blacks or power zoom and focus. Once setup those features are rarely used by most people. This projector falls into the well balanced category.When you take into account how many best mode lumens this unit can put on the screen compared to anything else under $10,000,the blacks I would call good enough. Other than a few quirks it has few peers.I quite happy with my purchase of this unit. Customer service is great and English speaking.. right here in the good old USA. If looking for a projector in the $2500 and up range. The SP8602 should be on your shortlist!...
